Welcome to the War Brides search page.
There are currently over 60,000 records in the index. More names will be added regularly. If you do not find the name you are searching for this time, we ask for your patience. Please check back regularly.
The indexes include names from ships that sailed from the UK after December 29th 1945. There are currently no entries for brides who sailed before that date. If you or a relative sailed before that date and you wish to have the details added to the index we shall be pleased to do so but we can only add entries where the date and ship name are provided. The entry will be annotated to show that the data was provided from an outside source. Please click here to send us the details.
In order to get the best from your search, please read carefully the following frequently asked questions -
What information
do I have to put into the search in order to access the index?
You need to put in the surname AND first name. Please remember that women already married at the date of sailing will appear on the passenger list under their married name and not their maiden name.
What information do the passenger lists contain on children?
Although the lists do contain names and ages of all children travelling the searchable index only has names of children travelling other than with their mother.
What will the results tell me?
The search result will show every instance of that name that appears in the index including any middle names or initials. It will give the ship name, the port of departure and the country of destination.
Is this the
complete information contained in the passenger list (and in the database)?
There is usually more information - sometimes
not much more but mostly there is lots more.
How can I find
out the rest of the information?
This
link explains what else you can do.
Why doesn't the search find the name I am looking for?
The most likely reason at the moment is that
the list has not yet been transcribed so you should check back regularly.(Tip -
to find out if the list has been transcribed, try entering the name of a fellow
traveller, to see if their name shows up - if it does, you know that the ship
has been completed). The next most likely reason is that there is a spelling
error. Make sure you have spelled the name correctly, but the error could lie in
the database or the original passenger list. The names were transcribed at least
once by clerks sixty years ago from handwritten lists. They have now been
transcribed again, this time onto the database. Mistakes could have been
introduced that way.Try being a little inventive with the spelling. If all else
fails,
